A
good time was had by all at this latest charity event for Little India,
despite a disappointing turnout. Over £1,060 was raised from sales
of tickets, an excellent auction and a raffle. Organiser Adrian Natzel, a Leicestershire County Councillor, pointed out that attendance was affected by school half-term week when many people take the chance to take their families on holiday. (More significant perhaps was "the trial" on Coronation Street!). The
buffet dinner and auction was held to raise funds for Prostaid, an East
Midlands Charity to raise awareness of Prostrate cancer and to enable
the purchase of specialist equipment for the NHS. (Click on the logo to go to the Prostaid web site)
The auction included many valuable examples of local sporting memorabilia
with Leicester City, Leicestershire County cricket and England rugby items
all signed by well known sportsmen. Pride
of place though was a pair of boxing gloves signed by John Conteh and
Frank Bruno which raised a magnificent £350. Arnesby's Brian Randall
did an excellent job as Auctioneer, keeping everyone entertained with
an endless stream of patter to encourage bidding. (right, winner Stuart
Ellingworth with his new gloves)
